Door-to-Door Storm Chasers

After a major weather event, unlicensed contractors often flood neighborhoods offering cheap roof repairs. They may offer to “work with your insurance” — often meaning they’ll inflate damage claims. Work performed is typically shoddy or never completed.

Unusually Low Bids

A quote that’s 40%+ below the others is almost always a red flag. Contractors who underbid typically plan to: use substandard materials, demand additional payments mid-project, or walk away after collecting the deposit.

Verification Checklist

• Verify license number at your state contractor board website
• Request a certificate of insurance naming you as additional insured
• Never pay cash only — use check or card for paper trail
• Never pay more than 30% upfront
• Get everything in writing including start date, end date, materials
